So, I started two classes last Monday in addition to the three I was already taking. I have realized that it's just too much for me to take on right now, and wasn't thinking when I scheduled my classes.

I know the standard "call Ivy Tech" answer, and plan to tomorrow, but if I drop one or both of my new classes what will happen. I know it is outside of the refund, so Ivy Tech won't actually refund the tuition, though personally I think they should go on a sliding scale. Anyway, they will probably charge me for the tuition back, and will probably do so immediately.

Has anyone been through this situation? Is there anyway they can take that money out of next semester's refund? If not, will they work with me on payments to pay that back before next semester? I am just wondering.

If anyone could help, please let me know. I really don't think I can do well in any of my classes unless I drop one or two.

The reason that dropping the classes that start in October can be tricky is you run into what is called a multiple census date (MCD). I am not exactly sure the reason for the date is, but in order for your aid not to be adjusted you would have to withdraw from the classes after this date, which will be different for every student and dependent on the date of your latest class. If you withdraw before this date, the financial aid office would have to adjust your aid and it would result in a balance that would need to be paid. Depending on your financial situation, it could be a significant amount of money.

If a balance is due, you would be able to use some of next semester's refund to pay for it. This is called a special agreement and a FA Advisor would need to go over that with you. The only thing is that you would only be able to do this once with your time at Ivy Tech, so be careful with it. Other payment options you would need to talk with business affairs, as they might have special rules for these types of situations.

If it is after the MCD, a W would be put on your transcript and only affect your standards of academic progress. I would check your "SAP" and make sure your are in good standing before you withdraw.

I hope this helps.

That actually helps a ton. It seems like my only option right now, because I am stressing out over my other classes that I'm not motivated to sign into blackboard at all. I'm going to campus next Monday to talk with an adviser to get it straitened out. I'm going to start taking all of my classes on campus if possible instead of online, I think that is what is messing me up. If I could do the special agreement that would be great. I mean, I could probably get most of the money together before then, but I wouldn't want to mess it up.

Thanks so much for the answer.
I waaaay over-scheduled myself this semester [newbie mistake] and decided to take 1 8 week course, 3 accelerated "16 weeks jammed into 8 weeks" course, and 3 full term courses. I really don't know what I was thinking.

I am seeing a lot of students struggle with the 8 week courses and not realize how fast paced they really are. You are defiently not the only one that has been in this situation.

If you have attended the first couple of sessions of the class, there may be a chance that you might not owe anything. Talking with an advisor will help clear a lot of things up. Until then, it isn't something to get to worked up about. Just be aware of the classes you take for the next few semesters. As long as your are in good standing, everything should be fine.

Good Luck!
